Music gets played a hundred thousand times a day across the world — on radio, in broadcasts, across borders. Every one of those plays is supposed to generate a payment to the people who wrote it, recorded it, performed it. Most of those payments are tracked by collective management organisations, the institutions built a century ago to handle a problem too large for any individual to manage alone.

That system was built on trust, because for a hundred years there was no other option. No one could independently verify a CMO's accounting, so no one did. The rights holder received a statement and was expected to believe it. Not because the institutions were dishonest, but because verification was technically impossible. The data lived in too many places, in too many formats, behind too many walls.

That impossibility is over.

The walls were never really about secrecy. They were about fragmentation. Every collecting society reports in its own format, its own structure, its own language — one society's "amount" is another's "net," one counts plays, another counts only years. No single party could ever hold them side by side. That is the wall. And it is the wall TuneTracer takes down: it normalises any rights statement, in any format, into one comparable picture — and it has proven this on the Nordic societies that no competitor even covers. What was a hundred incompatible ledgers becomes a single language in which a play can finally be set against a payment.

From there, TuneTracer does one thing, and does it without guessing: it takes an independent record of what was actually broadcast, and sets it against what a rights holder was actually paid. Where a recording was played and no payment followed, that gap is not estimated, not inferred, not argued. It is established — traced to a specific play and a specific statement, or it is not claimed at all. Empty is a correct answer. We would rather show nothing than show something we cannot prove.

That discipline is the entire point. In a field where it is easy to make noise and inflate numbers, TuneTracer's value is that its findings hold when someone examines them. We do not accuse the institutions. We make the facts visible, quietly, to the person they belong to — and let the contrast speak.

The deeper shift is this: for the first time, the people who make music can independently see whether the system built to serve them actually did. Not through a campaign. Not through a lawsuit. Through facts they can hold in their hand. The balance of knowledge moves back to the rights holder, where it should have been all along.

What was unverifiable is becoming infrastructure — a permanent layer between what was played and what was paid. Once that layer exists, the value that was invisible becomes addressable.
